Gastric Sleeve

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery? Gastric sleeve surgery, one of the most commonly performed surgical interventions today, is known as "stomach reduction surgery". This surgery provides effective results in the treatment of obesity. Surgery Process
  • Change in Stomach Shape: In gastric sleeve surgery, the stomach is literally turned into a long, thin tube. With the laparoscopic method, 80 percent of the stomach is cut out, which causes the stomach volume to be restricted.
  • Restricting Food Intake: This shaping of the stomach significantly restricts food intake. Additionally, surgery has a slight effect on reducing food absorption.
  • Appetite Decrease and Insulin Resistance Break: In people who have undergone gastric sleeve surgery, their appetite decreases and weight loss begins. Additionally, insulin resistance improves before it even occurs.
Surgery Duration
  • Gastric sleeve surgery usually takes an average of 1.5 hours. Postoperative risks are low and unwanted side effects are minimal.
The Most Commonly Performed Stomach Reduction Surgery
  • The most commonly performed stomach reduction surgery today is "sleeve gastrectomy" or "sleeve gastrectomy" as it is known in medicine. This surgery, which has a 15-year history, is preferred because its effectiveness has been proven and its risk rates are low.
  • Another type of stomach reduction surgery is “gastric bypass” surgery. However, this method is not preferred except in special cases.
Who Does It Apply To? Suitable candidates for sleeve gastrectomy surgery are:
  • Those whose body mass index (BMI) is over 40 kg/m².
  • Those with a BMI between 35 and 40, who are overweight and have problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
  • People with a BMI between 30-35 and new type 2 diabetes and metabolic problems (by doctor's decision).
Age Restrictions
  • Gastric sleeve surgery is performed on individuals between the ages of 18-65. Parental approval is required for those under the age of 18, and the health status of those over the age of 65 is evaluated.
Post-Operative Pain and Scar
  • Since the surgery performed with the laparoscopic method is performed through small incisions, pain is minimal. The scars become invisible within a few months.
Weight Loss and Tracking
  • Those who have sleeve gastrectomy surgery lose 60 percent of their excess weight 5 years after the surgery. However, continuous vitamin and mineral support may be required after surgery.
Weight Regain and Revision Surgeries
  • The rate of weight regain is around 15 percent. In this case, revision surgeries may be required. These surgeries should be performed by experienced surgeons.
Tracking and Support
  • Those who have sleeve gastrectomy surgery are followed by the obesity team for life. This approach is important to protect the patient's health and intervene when necessary.
Although sleeve gastrectomy surgery is an effective option in weight management and combating obesity, patients need regular follow-up and support before and after surgery.
